How to get Married in Australia
You MUST fill in a “Notice of Intent to Marry” form and lodge it with the celebrant you choose AT LEAST ONE MONTH AND ONE DAY before your wedding day but not more than 18 months before. Both parties need to fill out the Notice and have their signatures witnessed by specified people or by the Authorised Marriage Celebrant.
Lodging the Notice
The date your completed Notice is received in person or by mail by the celebrant, is your date of lodgement. If your wedding date is so close that it is necessary to post your Notice before we meet, please contact me immediately. If you are posting or faxing your Notice, you must have your signatures witnessed as indicated on the form – e.g. Doctor, Policeman, Solicitor etc. A local Police Station is easiest or otherwise I can witness your Notice when we meet.
Legal Paperwork Required
If born in Australia – the Original Birth Certificate or Original Extract of Birth Certificate must be supplied (plus Photo ID).
If born outside Australia – either a Passport or Original Birth Certificates must be supplied (plus Photo ID.)
If Divorced or Widowed – Original certificates must be supplied.
